Koolhaas in Paris

Building Design

Rem Koolhaas and Jean Nouvel are competing to design a shopping centre in the centre of Paris. Also vying to transform the Les Halles area are Dutch practice MVRDV and French firm SEURA. The competing practices have been asked to redesign the public space, reduce traffic and improve transport links. The Les Halles underground shopping centre was built in the 1970s, but has since become a run-down, much loathed part of Paris. The mayor of Paris Bertrand Delanoe pledged to improve the area when he was elected in 2001. A winner will be chosen at the end of June.
