Comfort and joy

Building Design

French firm Lacaton & Vassal’s AA show and recent inclusion on the Architecture Foundation HQ shortlist mark its emergence on a wider stage. The squidgy gallery sofas of the Architectural Association are a suitable place to leisurely take in the first UK exhibition on rising French architect Lacaton & Vassal. For this practice, comfort is paramount — its work is all about taking care of the user by creating buildings that are generous in space and spirit. So it is fitting that rather than being conveyed through dry architectural models, Lacaton & Vassal’s architecture is experienced in relaxed mode via three large screens projecting images that show its work under construction and in use — rather than the pristine completed building unsullied by human habitation and clutter.
